Fitz is well aware that it says something about his lifestyle that the Clipper reminds him of several places he's ended up over the years. On the other hand, being chained in a dank basement would also remind him of many places he's been over the years, so he generally figures it's not worth thinking about. The familiarity isn't a good thing - and the lack of cigarettes, drinks or a fudging door just rub in a short list of what he hates about it. But it does stop any particular outbursts of anger. He's not resigned to it, so he keeps his cool.

For the most part, he goes through the motions of playing along. He slouches, half-asleep in the common room during singalong, wincing occasionally. He reads in an overly comfortable chair, trying not to roll his eyes too often at the content. He tries to find someone to sit with during meals, and even actually enjoys the bathhouse. But, while he usually can't muster up actual cheer, there is a certain focus under the surface, which can be rare to see in him.

He's also doing his best to keep an eye on his friends, to see how they're handling it all. After all, part of 'familiar' also means knowing how much it sucks to play along - and some of the consequences to failing to play the part.

"You say that, I say that, the people of Skale didn't say that, leaving me with some absolutely justified worries. Anyway, the main signs are feeling physically better while also spotting monsters just lurking in the edges of your vision. Also getting into a lift and seeing if it's fake."

"Haven't seen any monsters yet," Yunlan says thoughtfully. "And my experience with induced dream states says if great things are happening for no reason it's probably because they're trying to pull you in deeper. But I wouldn't say a lot of unexpected good shit has been happening to me this week."

He pauses, and adds, "Except for seeing my cat again."

"You were clearly dealing with people with no subtlety. It's not that great things happen, it's that you subtlety start seem better, over time. But also worse and time doesn't work right so you're like 'it's been four days and yet that minor cut still hasn't healed'. If they rushed in, then everyone who knows about dream states would be able to go 'that's a little weird'."

It's all about the long game.

"...I suppose I did once hear something about pet therapy."

"Can't say the Lord of Nightmares was the subtle type," Yunlan agrees. "Anyway, you should meet him. Scottish fold, talks, 'patient.'"

Which surprises him not at all. Da Qing is not a cat filled with love and patience for the world.

"Really? And with a name like that, too. I'll keep an eye out for a talking cat." He grins, the unusually energetic undercurrent a little stronger. "There's a friend of mine hanging around here too, as it happens."

"Oh yeah?" Yunlan asks, eyebrows rising. "Who?"

"One of the Doctor's is here."

[wildguardian]

Yunlan's eyebrows shoot up. But--

"I didn't know there was more than one Doctor. I thought he was a... singular individual."

In more than one way.

[everythinglost]

"There's definitely only one Doctor, but he has a bunch of different faces. It's something his species can do, when they're about to die, instead they regenerate. I've met a couple of different Iris' too."

[wildguardian]

"So when you say one of the Doctors... same guy you know, but younger or older, and wearing a different face?"

[everythinglost]

"Exactly. This one's younger; blond hair, a little shorter than me, probably wears the same outfit everyday unless something's drastically changed..."

[wildguardian]

"You never mentioned to me that the man doesn't change clothes," Yunlan says, in the tones of someone who is judging his friend's taste even more harshly than before.

"First off, he changes his clothes, he just wears the same outfits. Sam said she thought it might be because of the changing faces thing, sort of anchoring yourself to one form. I think it's because he finds one look he likes and then can't be bothered dressing up." The thing about the Doctor Fitz least understands, as he feels that one of the best things about traveling through time and space is getting to play dress up.

"Second point, I'm just going to let you know there's a lot of pointed commentary that could be made here about your domestic habits."

"Make all the pointed commentary you want, but I know which piles of clothes on my floor are clean and which are dirty, and I don't wear copies of the exact same outfit every day of the week," Yunlan says with a lofty tone. "Anyway! What's this one's outfit?"

[everythinglost]

"I think it was a black velvet jacket or something, they're usually pretty dumb. Manages to pull it off through strength of personality." And, to be honest, he hadn't exactly been paying much attention to such minor things as clothes or even specific details of appearance.

The Doctor's the Doctor, and that's what matters. Maybe it's not exactly 'his' Doctor, but that doesn't mean he isn't more alive now than he almost ever was on the Barge.

"Blond guy, black velvet jacket," Yunlan repeats. "Right, that should be pretty easy to spot. I'll keep an eye out for him to say hello to.

"You seem like you're pretty thrilled about it," he adds.

"Why wouldn't I be?"

If it were the exact man he knew, Fitz might start adding evidence to that 'all a dream' theory, but as it is, he's simply able to be happy.

[wildguardian]

"No reason not to be," Yunlan agrees wryly. Well -- maybe the worries that might come along about what had happened to him, and how he'd ended up here, and how long he'd been trapped on this shithole of a ship. But:

"It's nice seeing people you've missed."

The Doctor is always in trouble, and sometimes it catches up enough that he has to take on a whole new body - which must mean a lot of trouble, considering what Fitz has seen him survive. But, at the same time, his faith in the Doctor is too solid for that to matter on any level other than the surface.

"It is. I get to hear about the massive amounts of trouble he's no doubt been in, just to start."

"All those exciting adventures you didn't nearly die in! That sounds fun."

He shakes his head after a moment. "You know, you've talked him up to me so much that the real thing is never going to compare now."

[everythinglost]

"Gotta tell him about how great the future is."

He shrugs. "People always say that, then they realize I was telling the truth." He pauses. "I could be offended at the amount of surprise they sometimes have when they say that, but I chose to be the better person."

[wildguardian]

"You have to admit, you sound pretty biased when he's the topic of conversation," Yunlan teases gently.

[everythinglost]

"He's my best friend, of course I'm biased. I'm well aware why there are people who don't get along with him, discounting the ones that are just evil, but I don't care about any of that. But I blame dismissing everything else I say about him as people just not being able to believe because of the world being a flawed place and shirt."

[wildguardian]

"Hey, I'm taking no stances on it!" Yunlan says easily. He hasn't developed an extremely high opinion of the Doctor, in any case, from taking the things Fitz says about him as Fitz's exact truth.

"I'll meet him first, then I'll tell you how much of your stories I should've believed."

"All the ones where I was super cool are completely true."

A quality that doesn't actually show up much in his stories, so it is a more limited pool.

"So, have you been doing anything besides thinking thoughts about woodchucks?"
